The motion

That the Parliament notes that the 52nd anniversary of the independence, and the National Day, of the People's Republic of Bangladesh occurred on 26 March 2023; understands that this day marks the declaration of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971; remembers those who, it believes, laid down their lives during Bangladesh's war of independence; celebrates the economic and cultural ties between Bangladesh and the UK; notes the contribution to society of the Bangladeshi community in Scotland, including in arts, culture, business, professional services and more; recognises what it sees as the challenges that Bangladesh faces in dealing with the impact of climate change, demonstrated, it believes, by the deadly floods in Bangladesh in spring and summer 2022, particularly in Sylhet and Sunamganj; notes with concern the evidence recently discussed at the Cross-Party Group on Bangladesh, which reportedly suggested that, in the future, the number of climate refugees having to leave Bangladesh could total the population size of a country like the Netherlands, if the worst climate effects occur; further notes what it sees as the importance of the relationship with the UK to the economic and political development of Bangladesh; considers that this relationship could provide integral support to help Bangladesh tackle the climate crisis and future-proof against the effects of climate change, and looks forward to the belated celebration of the 52nd Independence Day of Bangladesh in the Scottish Parliament on 25 April 2023, after the conclusion of Ramadan.
