Celebrating Reusable Nappy Week 2023

That the Parliament acknowledges 24 to 30 April 2023 as Reusable Nappy Week; recognises this as an international awareness week, originally called Real Nappy Week, which was launched by the Women's Environment Network in 1997; considers that the awareness week is an opportunity for families and individuals, as well as national and local government and all members of the reusable nappy community, including retailers, manufacturers, laundry services, and nappy libraries, to come together and have conversations about the benefits of using reusable nappies as an alternative to disposable nappies; understands that reusable nappies are a more cost-effective option for families than disposable nappies; considers that using reusable nappies instead of disposables is an important part of transitioning towards a circular economy; understands that using reusable nappies instead of disposables can offset as much as 38.2 kg of single-use plastic per baby over two and a half years; believes that "nappy libraries", which are normally run by volunteers and hire out reusable nappies to interested individuals, play an important role in educating and supporting families who are choosing to reuse; commends North Ayrshire Council for, it understands, becoming the first local authority in the UK to introduce a "birth to potty" free reusable nappy initiative in 2019, which is a scheme that operates on a cost-neutral basis due to reducing the number of single-use nappies sent to landfill sites, and encourages the Scottish Government to take further action to expand access to reusable nappy initiatives across Scotland, and work in partnership with local authorities, nappy libraries, the third sector, parents and enterprises that are involved in making and providing reusable nappies, to help reduce the environmental impact of single-use nappies, improve parental choice and alleviate the cost of living crisis.
