Debt Happens Campaign, West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges what it sees as the importance of the Debt Happens initiative, which was launched by West Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau (WDCAB); understands that the aim of this campaign is to encourage those who are worried or have concerns about money or debt, to reach out for advice; further understands that the analysis by polling firm, YouGov, concluded that an estimated 460,000 people across the UK are expected to go into debt during the current cost of living crisis, with 644,000 predicting a growth in their current debt; considers that this is the worst cost of living crisis in living memory and believes that, as a result, lots of people will have had no choice but to go into debt to pay for everyday essentials; praises the work of WDCAB in the provision of specialist debt advice, which, it understands, is given in a free, impartial and confidential environment, and applauds its work in 2022 with 5,368 clients supported and more than 34,000 issues covered, and understands that it helped to secure £1.1 million in client financial gains and another £370,000 in debt write-offs.
