Lanarkshire Samaritans at 50: Celebrating 50 Years of Listening in Lanarkshire

The motion

That the Parliament commends the Lanarkshire Samaritans on 50 years of work in the Lanarkshire branch; notes that the charity works to provide confidential support to anyone who is in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide; understands that the branch receives approximately 2,000 hours of calls annually, and has helped 8,000 individuals in the past year through calls, emails and outreach work; considers that the Lanarkshire Samaritans branch has come a long way since 1973, providing crucial support to thousands of people in need of support from around the UK; understands that Lanarkshire Samaritans is part of a wider framework in Scotland, with nearly 1,000 volunteers and 19 branches; believes that the Lanarkshire branch is sustained by the hard work of staff leaders, and around 60 volunteers who are available on its free helpline for anyone who is struggling, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; thanks all the volunteers, staff, businesses, donors and the wider community for supporting Lanarkshire Samaritans over the years; notes that Lanarkshire Samaritans celebrated 50 years with a branch Open Day on 21 April 2023, and encourages local businesses, organisations and individuals to support the future work of the Lanarkshire Branch, including through volunteering, training and fundraising.
