New Scots Thriving in Glasgow Education

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes reports that young people in Glasgow whose first language is not English are achieving better results than the school population in general; recognises that nearly one in four pupils have English as an additional language (EAL), which is around 18,000 out of 71,000 pupils; acknowledges that this number has increased from 12% to 26% in the last 10 years; notes that, in 2022, 87.4% of EAL pupils achieved at least one SCQF at level five compared to 83.9% of all pupils; further notes that EAL pupils are also found to have better attendance and fewer exclusions; considers that while, in Glasgow, a minority of bilingual and multilingual learners are new arrivals to the UK, Glasgow City Council enrols hundreds of pupils each month with English as a second language due to humanitarian crises in their home countries, and welcomes this as what it considers to be a clear example of Glasgow’s history of being a haven for displaced people and also of the importance placed on education by young new Scots and their families.
