Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from 1 to 7 May 2023; notes that it is a week-long campaign dedicated to talking about mental health problems that can occur before, during and after pregnancy, and that this year’s theme is "Together in a changing world"; acknowledges that perinatal mental illnesses include a wide range of conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, stress-related disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder; understands that as many as one in five women develop a mental illness during pregnancy or in the first year after birth, but that service provision is not commensurate with demand, and that regional variation in care is problematic for many women; recognises the excellent work of professionals and organisations that support and campaign on behalf of women with maternal mental health problems, including Parent Infant Mental Health Scotland, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, and Let's All Talk North East Mums (LATNEM) Peer Support; highlights public petition PE2017, which calls for the period that specialist perinatal mental health support is available to be extended beyond one year, and commends the Perinatal Mental Health Partnership UK for organising Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week, and for raising public and professional awareness of perinatal mental health problems since the week was first launched in 2014.
