Mental Health Awareness Week
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from 15 to 21 May 2023; considers this year’s theme of "anxiety" to be extremely important as, it understands, although anxiety is a normal emotion in everyone, sometimes it can manifest into a serious mental health issue; notes that a recent survey conducted by the Mental Health Foundation, the organisation behind this annual campaign, showed that a quarter of adults said that they felt so anxious that it stopped them from doing the things they want to do some or all of the time, with six in 10 adults feeling this way at least some of the time, but that, on what the organisation says is a positive note, anxiety can be made easier to manage; hopes that, by focusing on anxiety for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week, it will aid people's awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem, and commends the aims of Mental Health Awareness Week, which, it believes, is a time for people to think about mental health, tackle stigma and work together in creating a society that, at every opportunity possible, prevents mental health problems from developing, and to help protect the collective mental wellbeing of all people.
