Evie Williamson Awarded Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year 2023

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Shetland teenager, Evie Williamson, on being awarded Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year 2023; understands that Evie was awarded the Frank Jamieson Memorial Trophy, as well as winning both the Open and Traditional competitions; further understands that her instrument was made by her father, Gilbert, and that her older brother, Magnus, also won the competition in 2021; notes that this year marks the 41st time the competition has been held; also congratulates Ami Grains on winning Best Played Slow Air, Kristie Williamson on winning Best Played Reel, Zander Williamson on winning Best Played Waltz, Jenny Henry on winning Best Reel Composed in the Shetland Style, and Yelena Anderson and Elizabeth Jamieson on winning the Shetland Folk Society Junior Tune Competition in the Junior and Senior categories respectively; commends every participant in the competition for demonstrating their hard work and skill; considers that the Young Fiddler of the Year competition both fosters and demonstrates the strength of musical heritage in Shetland; expresses its support for traditional music, and wishes Evie and all participants well in their future musical endeavours.
