HyImpulse Technologies Conducts Orbital Launcher Engine Testing in Unst, Shetland

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that SaxaVord Spaceport in Unst, Shetland, and German company, HyImpulse Technologies, have conducted engine testing for a small orbital launcher, as the next step towards sub-orbital launches from SaxaVord Spaceport; understands that SaxaVord Spaceport and HyImpulse Technologies have been collaborating for almost four years; further understands that this joint work should see the first sub-orbital launch from SaxaVord Spaceport later in 2023; notes that HyImpulse Technologies marked the engine testing by inviting guests from the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency and elected representatives to visit them in Unst; believes that SMEs are vital to the development of Scotland’s space sector; further believes that the growing space industry is creating opportunities for local supply chains, such as Shetland’s local firms, which are drawing on experience in supporting the oil and gas sector to support the space industry; considers that Unst’s northerly location, at the crossroads of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, makes it an ideal spot to launch small satellites into orbit; wishes all involved in Shetland’s space sector well, and looks forward to further developments.
