Opening of the Clarice Pears Building, Home to the University of Glasgow’s School of Health and Wellbeing

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Glasgow on the opening of the new Clarice Pears Building, which is home to the university’s School of Health and Wellbeing; understands that the centre brings together academics from across disciplines at the university to drive forward research on health inequalities in Scotland, and to identify opportunities to improve the health of individuals and population health more broadly, in Glasgow and across Scotland; acknowledges that the building is also home to the new Byres Community Hub, which provides space for the public and community groups to work with the university on issues linked to health and wellbeing, including an interactive exhibition co-designed with the Glasgow Science Centre that is open to the public; notes that the MRC/SCO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU) is also based in the Clarice Pears Building, which, it considers, conducts high quality research on health inequalities and has a focus on understanding how social, behavioural, economic, political and environmental factors influence health; commends the report by the SPHSU and the Health Foundation, launched in January 2023, on health inequalities, including in relation to mortality rates and health behaviours since the year 2000; believes that the work undertaken in the Clarice Pears Building, due to officially open later in 2023, will play an important role in identifying solutions to address inequalities in Scotland, and wishes the University of Glasgow and its School of Health and Wellbeing the best for their future research in this field.
