Sewage Crisis in Scotland

The motion

That the Parliament notes the recent official Scottish Water figures, which show that sewage was dumped at least 14,000 times across Scotland in 2022; understands that this was an increase of 30% compared with 2021; expresses serious concern at reports that only 4% of sewage overflows in Scotland are currently being monitored; understands that unmonitored sewage outflows are being discharged into the Water of Leith, the River Almond and the Figgate Burn in Edinburgh; recognises what it sees as the huge importance of these locations, both as a habitat for wildlife, including at least 15 species of fish as well as birds and mammals, and as a beloved walking route for locals and tourists; notes the motion tabled by Councillor Jack Caldwell criticising these discharges, which, it understands, was unanimously passed by the City of Edinburgh Council, and notes the calls from campaigners for every sewage dump to be properly recorded and published, and for the upgrading of Scotland’s ageing sewage system.
