Sad Passing of Artist, Teacher and Lecturer, Malcolm Lochhead

The motion

That the Parliament notes the sad passing of artist, teacher and lecturer, Malcolm Lochhead, at the age of 74; understands that Malcolm was educated at the Glasgow School of Art, that his distinguished career included roles as a lecturer at The Queen's College, Glasgow, and subsequently, Glasgow Caledonian University when it was established, and that, upon his retirement, he was awarded Professor Emeritus of Design at the education institution; recognises that Mr Lochhead was known for his ambitious and beautiful embroidery, and that his portfolio of work includes designing the cushion on which the Scottish crown resides at the opening of the Scottish Parliament and was last in use when the late Queen Elizabeth II was lying in state at St Giles' Cathedral, the hangings at Stirling Castle, and the altar cloth in the Shrine of St Mungo's in Glasgow Cathedral; acknowledges the work that was understood to be Mr Lochhead's most cherished was a memorial parochet at the Giffnock Synagogue in Eastwood; recognises that the work was commissioned by the family of murdered teenager, Yoni Jesner, who was resident in Eastwood and tragically lost his life in a terrorist attack, in September 2002, when he was on holiday in Israel; agrees that Mr Lochhead was an exceptional talent in art and teaching, and offers its condolences to his family at this very difficult time.
