The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Wemyss Bay train station has been crowned the best in the UK, winning the World Cup of Stations competition, which was organised by the Rail Delivery Group; notes that Wemyss Bay topped the final online poll on 26 May 2023 to beat Denmark Hill and Leamington Spa stations having won the previous rounds; understands that the station was nominated by the Friends of Wemyss Bay Station group and championed by TV presenter and railway historian, Tim Dunn, who previously featured the Inverclyde stop in his The Architecture the Railways Built series; notes that Wemyss Bay Station is a Category A-listed building, which is renowned for its curved iron and glass roof, as well as a clocktower outside, and that it was originally constructed in 1865 but rebuilt in 1903 by prolific architect, James Miller, and engineer, Donald Mathieson; thanks the Friends of Wemyss Bay Station and its volunteers who, it understands, arrange beautiful flower displays to compliment the station’s stunning design and who also run the station book shop and help to maintain the station to make it appealing to locals and visitors, and hopes that this accolade will lead to more people visiting Wemyss Bay by train and the wider Inverclyde area.
