Marking 100 Years of Community Land Ownership

That the Parliament welcomes the 2023 Community Land Scotland conference, which is being held in the 100th anniversary-year of the first substantial transfer of land into community hands in Scotland that occurred when Lord Leverhulme transferred part of his estate to the local community in Stornoway in 1923, resulting in the establishment of the Stornoway Trust; notes that the theme of this year’s Community Land Scotland conference, which takes place on 2-3 June 2023 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, is Community Ownership and Land Reform: Marking the centenary, shaping the future; further notes that the conference, which is taking place in what is expected to be the same year as the next Land Reform Bill is due to be introduced in the Scottish Parliament, will draw on a hundred years of community ownership and imagine a brighter future with sustained and creative land reform in Scotland, and understands that the conference will create a platform for delegates to imagine the bold changes needed in land reform and learn about community-led biodiversity and to host conversations on repopulation through housing and other approaches.
