Coeliac Awareness Week 15 to 21 May 2023, Coeliac Disease is Different for Everyone

That the Parliament understands that coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting one in 100 people; further understands, however, that around 60% of the approximately 32,000 people with the condition in Scotland remain undiagnosed, leaving them potentially at risk of long-term health complications; understands that the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is 13 years for an adult; welcomes Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week from 15 to 21 May 2023, and its campaign, Coeliac Disease is Different for Everyone, which aims to provide answers to those who are experiencing unexplained symptoms such as extreme fatigue, persistent mouth ulcers, unexplained neurological symptoms, unexplained anaemia, unexplained subfertility and recurrent miscarriage; encourages those experiencing any of these symptoms or more commonly known symptoms of the condition, such as tiredness, sickness, diarrhoea, constipation, and stomach pain, to visit isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk, and calls on the Scottish Government to urge full adoption of the coeliac clinical pathway by health boards across Scotland in order to improve diagnosis and ongoing management of the condition.
