Anniversary of Tiananmen Square

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 4 June 2023 marks the 34th anniversary of what it considers the brutal oppression of peaceful pro-democracy activists in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, in 1989, in which it is estimated that thousands died or were wounded; recognises what it sees as the bravery and courage of those who protested in Tiananmen Square on this date in 1989; considers that, for the three decades since the events in Tiananmen Square, the Chinese Communist Party has continued to violate the rights of its people; expresses concern that Hong Kong was, it believes, the last place in China that commemorated the massacre in an annual vigil until it was banned in 2020, and urges MSPs to hold China accountable for its continued actions, which, it considers, violate human rights and the values that protesters stood for in the Tiananmen Square protests.
