Launch of the #UnboundTheGreyhound Campaign
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the newly-formed coalition of animal welfare organisations supporting a phased end to greyhound racing in Scotland through the #UnboundTheGreyhound campaign; notes that there remains one greyhound racetrack in Scotland, the unlicensed Thornton Greyhound Stadium; understands that there are inherent risks of injury and even death associated with racing dogs anti-clockwise around curved tracks at 40 miles per hour; highlights the latest reported data released by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), which states that there were 17,930 injuries and 2,412 deaths of dogs across the UK between 2018 and 2021; understands that there is no similar data at the unlicensed racetrack in Scotland where, it believes, there is no official regulatory body present to ensure that animal welfare standards are met; notes the reported animal health and welfare concerns linked with greyhound racing from cradle to grave, including neglect, malnutrition, doping with Class A substances, inadequate kennelling conditions, and lack of adequate healthcare provision; wishes the organisations involved in the coalition, including OneKind, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, League Against Cruel Sports, Grey2K USA Worldwide, Animal Concern, Hope Rescue, All-party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group (APDAWG), Scotland Against Greyhound Racing (SAGE), and Say No to Greyhound Racing in Scotland, and all volunteers mobilising on this issue, the best of luck with their campaign efforts.
