Launch of Documentary Film, When the Words Away Went

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the launch of When the Words Away Went, which is a feature length documentary film by the Stroke Association that follows the journey of three stroke survivors with aphasia, a complex language and communication disorder resulting from damage to the language centres of the brain; congratulates Tom Middlemass from Gilmerton, Edinburgh, on his involvement in the film; commends him on the art therapy that he undertook during his stroke recovery, which features in the film; notes that Tom had his stroke in 2016 and has had aphasia, which affects his speech and language, since then; commends him on the huge efforts he continues to put into his recovery and on his art exhibition at Gilmerton Community Centre in April 2023; understands that four in 10 stroke survivors develop aphasia after their stroke and this means that at least 50,000 people in Scotland live with aphasia and the challenges that it presents; believes that no two people will have the same difficulties, as aphasia affects everyone differently, and encourages MSPs to watch the documentary on Channel 4 or visit the Stroke Association website to learn more about the condition and about Tom’s story.
