The motion

That the Parliament believes that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is facing a real crisis; notes reports that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service regrettably plans to strip appliances on a temporary basis from 10 stations, including Maryhill, Govan and Cowcaddens in Glasgow from September 2023; understands that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is expected to receive a flat cash budget settlement from the Scottish Government for the next four years, resulting in the service reportedly having to make £36 million in cuts; believes that the withdrawal of these services will have an adverse effect on local communities; recognises that firefighters play an important role in keeping the public safe, even if it means risking their own lives; notes that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service works closely with other emergency services on the frontline or in a supporting role; considers that firefighters do much more than simply put out fires; recognises that they often attend road accidents with cutting equipment, deal with dangerous substances spilled on roads and that firefighters and fire service staff also provide emergency first aid, CPR, and other forms of medical assistance if an ambulance or doctor has not yet arrived; understands that they can also be involved in animal rescues and assist with flood emergencies; notes their involvement in youth intervention work with young people to ensure that they develop a safe understanding of hazards and risks and understand the impact of nuisance behaviour and hoax fire calls have on their lives; believes that the withdrawal of appliances from these stations is the latest in a long line of cuts that are undermining their ability to respond to incidents in the communities they serve, and urges the Scottish Government to re-think the cash budget settlement as a matter of urgency.
