The motion

That the Parliament congratulates The Orcadian newspaper on being named Scottish Weekly Newspaper of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards in Glasgow; recognises that, alongside this award, the paper’s Chief reporter, Sarah Gilmour, won Local Reporter of the Year, while sub-editor, Mark Harcus, was named Local Feature Writer of the Year; further recognises that the paper came second in Campaign of the Year for its Gaan the Distance for Ukraine appeal; notes that The Orcadian is the oldest newspaper in Orkney, having been published since 1854; understands that these are just the latest in a string of accolades awarded to the paper and its journalists in recent years; believes that a strong local press is not just an asset for local communities, but vital to the functioning of a healthy democracy; acknowledges the loyal readership The Orcadian has developed in Orkney and further afield; commends the paper and its staff for their hard work, and congratulates them for their well-deserved achievements.
