The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that Diabetes Awareness Week 2023 runs from 12 to 18 June; understands that the event is organised by Diabetes UK, which has a long history of campaigning and was founded in 1934 by the writer H G Wells and Dr R D Lawrence, who were themselves diabetic; believes that the week is all about creating awareness of the condition and encouraging people to share their experiences of living with diabetes; considers that diabetes affects more people in the UK than any other serious health condition, with 4.6 million people who have type 1, and an estimated 12.3 million people who are potential type 2 diabetics, and notes that many other groups and organisations are also taking part in Diabetes Awareness Week, hosting a wide variety of informative and fundraising events, as, it believes, raising awareness of diabetes and what changes people can make in order to reduce their risk is the main aim of Diabetes UK and many other diabetes charities.
