The motion

That the Parliament congratulates South Aberdeenshire-based business, Mearns Chilli Farm, which was a finalist in the category of Best New Product for an Emerging Business at the North East Scotland Food and Drink Awards on 8 June 2023; understands that Mearns Chilli Farm was established by Dr Clare Brown, a plant and soil scientist with a background in grazing and erosion management, fossil pollen analysis, plant rooting strategies and soil physics; notes that during the COVID-19 lockdown, Dr Brown decided to turn her land that was used for grazing and the odd crop of hay into a chilli farm, and that, in 2021, the first crop of chillies were ripening in the shelter of polytunnels; recognises that the award for Best New Product for Emerging Business was for young, emerging businesses that have been trading for under two years, which launched food and non-alcoholic drink products between 1 January and 31 December 2022; understands that Mearns Chilli Farm’s product, Aji Limon and Lemonella Habanero Chilli Seasoning, which was nominated for the award, is made with two yellow chilli varieties, aji limon and lemonella habanero, that have been dried, ground and blended to create a tangy, hot seasoning with citrus notes, which is particularly good for use in stir fries, soups, or as a marinade, and congratulates all nominees and winners for showcasing the best of the north east’s thriving food and drinks sector.
