International Women in Engineering Day 2023

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that 23 June 2023 is International Women in Engineering Day (IWED); understands the vital role that women play in engineering projects across the globe and here in Scotland; further understands that women are still significantly underrepresented within the sector, with only 16.5% of engineers being women; notes that, as well as working to encourage more women into engineering, IWED 2023 has a particular focus on women in engineering who work to support safety and security, with this year’s theme being #MakeSafetySeen; applauds the work of engineers across Scotland in a range of different roles and sectors, including transport, construction, IT, defence, manufacturing and digital connectivity, and welcomes the steps being taken by organisations such as Openreach, which it understands successfully reformed its recruitment processes to attract more women into engineering roles.
