Scottish Young Carers Festival 2023
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that the 16th Scottish Young Carers Festival will be held from 1 to 3 August 2023; welcomes the three-day residential event that is funded by Scottish Government and hosted by Carers Trust Scotland, which will bring together over 600 young carers from across Scotland; recognises that the Scottish Young Carers Festival offers a fun, short break experience for young carers so that they can try out exciting activities that are different from those normally available in their day to day lives, and, importantly, allows them time away from their caring responsibilities to have fun and be children and young people first and foremost; appreciates that the Scottish Young Carers Festival provides a place for young people to meet others with a shared experience, allowing them to make friends in the knowledge that all participants have an understanding of how an unpaid caring role can impact the life of a young person; understands that the Scottish Young Carers Festival also offers designated spaces for consultation with young carers, giving them an opportunity to share their lived experiences in a way that is comfortable and appropriate for them, and that this contributes to an understanding of the young carer landscape at a national level; further understands that the Scottish Young Carers Festival also offers valuable networking opportunities for youth professionals to work directly with young carers, as well as organisations that work with young people at a national level to gain insight and connections that are useful in delivering comprehensive services to young carers; values what it sees as the immense contribution that young carers make to society, and the vital support that local carer organisations provide for young carers and unpaid carers across Scotland; recognises what it believes to be the importance of the Scottish Young Carers Festival; considers that appropriate services and support should be available to all young carers across Scotland to ensure that they have a fair chance to follow their aspirations, achieve their full potential and live fulfilled lives, and wishes all young carers taking part a very enjoyable Scottish Young Carers Festival.
