Dumfries and Galloway Youth Work Project Wins National Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dumfries and Galloway Council’s pioneering mental health initiative, after it was recognised as the Mental Health and Wellbeing Project of the Year at the National Youth Awards 2023; notes that the Low-Level Mental Health Support in Schools project has now been implemented across all 16 local authority high schools, and is revolutionising mental health services for young people in Dumfries and Galloway by delivering crucial mental health support to more than 500 young people annually; acknowledges that what it sees as this ground-breaking programme equips young people with strategies to navigate the challenges that they face in their lives, and acts as a primary point of contact, providing referrals to more specialised support, as necessary, while youth workers employ a comprehensive approach, which combines youth work principles with person-centred and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques, that fosters an understanding of their emotions and exploring coping strategies that allow young people to alleviate distress and build resilience; notes that the project is a collaborative effort between Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Work and Educational Psychology teams, and, it considers, exemplifies an innovative mental health service for secondary school students by providing a mental health pathway that integrates youth work, educational psychology, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), school nursing and psychology, and recognises the important role that the project played in supporting young people during the COVID-19 restrictions and pressures imposed by the pandemic, which, it believes, disproportionately affected young people in the region.
