Scapa Flow Museum Shortlisted for Art Fund Museum of the Year

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Scapa Flow Museum in Orkney on being selected as a finalist for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023, which is the world’s largest museum prize; understands that, as the national fundraising charity for art, Art Fund annually shortlists five world-leading museums for Museum of the Year; notes that Scapa Flow Museum has been shortlisted for the award in 2023 alongside The Burrell Collection (Glasgow), Leighton House (London), The Mac (Belfast), and the Natural History Museum (London); understands that Scapa Flow Museum, which is located on the island of Hoy, tells the stories of Orkney and Orcadians during the First World War and Second World War, the construction of the huge naval base at Lyness on Hoy, and the Royal Navy and military presence in Orkney; notes that, following eight years of fundraising, four years of project development, and engaging with local primary school pupils on the design and layout of the museum through the Junior Curators programme, the museum reopened its £4.4 million redevelopment to the public in 2022; acknowledges what it sees as the contribution that Scapa Flow Museum has made to communities in Orkney, the UK and globally, while also promoting better health, social inclusion and wellbeing priorities; notes that the winning museum will be announced at a ceremony at the British Museum in London on 12 July 2023, and wishes all at Scapa Flow Museum in Orkney all the very best for the award ceremony and beyond.
