Helensburgh’s Tennis Star, Gordon Reid, Wins 17th Grand Slam Doubles Title After Being Awarded an OBE
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Helensburgh’s Gordon Reid, as well as his tennis partner, Alfie Hewett, on winning their 17th Grand Slam title together, playing against Spain’s Martin de la Puente and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in the French Open, in what Reid himself has described as one of the best performances the duo has enjoyed in a considerable time; recognises that Reid and Hewett are now record-holders for the most Grand Slam men’s doubles titles won by a pair in the Open era; congratulates Reid, who is now a six-time Roland Garros champion; understands that this win also marks Gordon Reid’s 23rd major title, across both singles and doubles, including at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the Australian Open; considers that he has been a trailblazer in successfully promoting tennis and setting an excellent example for wheelchair tennis players across the UK, and understands that Reid was recently awarded an OBE during the The King’s Birthday Honours, having previously been made an MBE for his service to the sport, with his partner, Alfie Hewett, also being given such an honour.
