Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Gains UNESCO Status for Another 10 Years

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Galloway and Southern Ayrshire (GSA) Biosphere on having its UNESCO status renewed for another 10 years; notes that UN officials made known the decision during a reception at Drumlanrig Castle; recognises that the revalidation is in recognition of the area’s pioneering achievements in sustainable development and supporting global climate change goals; acknowledges that the GSA Biosphere’s boundary will now be extended to incorporate neighbouring Alloway, the Rhins of Galloway and 12 nautical miles of the marine environment, which will see the site grow from more than 5,200 square kilometres to almost 9,800 square kilometres; recognises that this is a significant milestone and excellent news for many communities, businesses and partners involved in uniting the biosphere’s vision and passion for sustainable rural economic development through best practice and partnership working; notes the groundbreaking work that has already been delivered thanks to its dedicated team, and wishes everyone involved continued success in the months and years ahead.
