Thales Glasgow Wins £169 Million Contract to Build Periscopes for the Royal Navy's Dreadnought Submarines

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that periscope firm, Thales Glasgow, has won a £169 million contract to build periscopes for the UK's new Dreadnought class of nuclear deterrent submarine; understands that the contract, awarded by BAE Systems, will sustain more than 150 highly-skilled engineering and support jobs in Scotland, mainly at the Thales site in Govan, Glasgow; recognises that Thales Glasgow has a 106-year tradition of making periscopes for Royal Navy submarines, and that every Royal Navy submarine since 1917 has carried a Thales periscope or optronics mast made on the River Clyde; welcomes that Thales Glasgow's workforce will be at the forefront of producing state-of-the-art multi-sensor combat system masts, also known as the "above water eyes", for the new Dreadnought-class submarines, which, it understands, are being built to replace the Vanguard-class vessels currently in service, and considers that the contract will create highly-skilled jobs, boost the economy and showcase engineering skills and innovation in Scotland.
