The Burrell Collection Wins Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates The Burrell Collection in Glasgow’s Pollok Country Park on being awarded the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023, collecting a £120,000 prize, which it understands is the largest museum prize in the world; understands that the award was presented at a ceremony at the British Museum in London by the artist, Grayson Perry, to Duncan Dornan, the head of museums and collections for Glasgow Life, the charity that manages the collection, and that the winner was announced on BBC One’s The One Show by the actors, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon; recognises that The Burrell Collection is the 9,000-object legacy of Sir William and Constance Burrell, who donated their collection to the city of Glasgow, and that the collection houses one of the most significant holdings of Chinese art in the UK, medieval treasures such as stained glass, arms and armour, over 200 of the world’s finest tapestries, and paintings by world famous artists such as Degas, Manet and Cézanne; understands that the collection was reopened in 2022 following a £68 million, six-year refurbishment funded by Glasgow City Council, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Scottish and UK governments and funds from private donors and trusts; further understands that the refurbishment increased the museum’s gallery space, with 225 displays presented across 24 galleries, enabling visitors to see more of the collection on display; notes that the collection welcomed over 500,000 visitors in its first year after reopening; considers that the prize is a fantastic accolade for this world-class Glasgow institution, and wishes the team at The Burrell Collection well as the museum continues to benefit local communities and welcome visitors from across the UK and around the world.
