£1 Million to Save the Unicorn
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the provision of £1.1 million from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) to the Unicorn Preservation Society, which is earmarked for use in carrying out urgent repairs; believes that the repairs will sustain the Unicorn, which was launched in 1824, into the future; recognises that it is the third oldest ship in the world and has a long history of service as a reserve ship and a training vessel for the Royal Navy, and now as a museum; understands that the ship arrived in Dundee in 1873 and has sat on the city’s waterfront ever since as an integral part of Dundee's, Scotland's and Britain’s history and culture; recognises the large levels of care needed to preserve a ship so old, and is grateful to both the NHMF and the Unicorn Preservation Society for their work.
