UK Government and Incapacity Benefits

The motion

That the Parliament understands that the UK Government currently only spends the equivalent of 1.3% of GDP on incapacity benefits, which are benefits that allow people to receive help while they are unable to work; regrets that this percentage reportedly falls well below other north-western European countries, and is less than half the percentage in countries such as Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Iceland and Switzerland; notes that, earlier in August 2023, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation reportedly warned that the UK's social security system is failing to provide adequate support, with disabled people "more likely to be in poverty, and in very deep poverty"; recognises what it sees as the hardships that disabled people face due to the lack of funding by the UK Government, and urges the UK Government to improve the support available to those who are unable to work.
