70 Years of St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Milton

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates parish priest, Father Paul McAlinden, and the parishioners of St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church in Milton on the Platinum Jubilee of the parish; notes that the parish was established in 1953 as part of Glasgow Corporation’s post-war municipal housing development in Milton, whilst the parishioners fundraised to construct the church building and attached presbytery on Ashgill Road, which was completed in 1954, and included the "Hippo Club" buy-a-brick scheme; understands that the eponymous secondary school was the first Catholic comprehensive school in Scotland, also formally opened in 1954 by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Thomas A Kerr and blessed by the Archbishop of Glasgow, Donald Alphonsus Campbell, but was later closed in 1998, and that the associated primary schools, St Ambrose and St Augustine's, merged together in 2009 to form St Monica's Primary School, named after the mother of Augustine of Hippo; further understands that the church building was designed by Charles William Gray of Reginald Fairlie and Partners and has been designated as a Category-B listed building since 1992; considers that the parish has continued to thrive since then, and wishes them the very best for their next 70 years of service to the community.
