The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the official opening of the baby loss and bereavement unit at University Hospital Wishaw on 24 August 2023; congratulates Louise Caldwell, from East Kilbride, on cutting the ribbon at the new facilities, at an opening ceremony attended by families and NHS Lanarkshire staff who have been closely involved in the project; acknowledges that the vision for the unit was rooted in Louise and Craig Caldwell’s personal journey of baby loss at University Wishaw Hospital, which led to Louise spearheading a campaign for women and families to have access to dedicated baby loss and bereavement units in all maternity hospitals in Scotland; notes that, in 2021, the Scottish Government responded positively to Louise’s campaign and committed to modernising miscarriage care to make it more compassionate, including access to dedicated baby loss units and bereavement care in all maternity hospitals to avoid women experiencing difficulties and the loss of a baby having to be in the main labour wards; appreciates the dedication and hard work of the University Hospital Wishaw staff in working with Louise and other families to ensure that the design of the unit reflects their needs; thanks Louise Caldwell for making a huge contribution to the baby loss community and to public life, by breaking down the barriers that, it believes, make it hard for people to talk about the impact of early pregnancy complications, miscarriage, stillbirth and baby loss, and wishes her well as she continues to campaign for the implementation of baby loss units across the country.
