Scotland’s First National British Indian Army Memorial

That the Parliament commends the unveiling of Scotland’s first National British Indian Army Memorial at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on 31 August 2023; understands that this is the first permanent memorial to recognise the service and sacrifice of over four million soldiers of the British Indian Army (BIA) in both world wars; recognises that Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Gurkhas, and many more from across other nations fought alongside the British Army, with more than 160,000 soldiers losing their lives; understands that there was a special link between Scotland and Force K6, a mule transport contingent of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps of mainly Punjabi Muslim soldiers from the Pakistan side of undivided India that came and stayed in the Highlands of Scotland after escaping from Dunkirk during the Second World War; further understands that there are nine graves to Indian servicemen that fought and died in the Second World War in Kingussie Cemetery; commends the work of Colourful Heritage to bring Scotland’s first National British Indian Army Memorial to Glasgow, and considers that this a fitting way to commemorate the service and sacrifice they made.
