Recognising Scotland’s Blue Carbon Resources

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Scotland's diverse blue carbon resources, across a range of species and habitats; understands that coastal kelp forests, seagrass meadows and tidal saltmarshes absorb CO2 during their growth, and that their detritus can be sequestered in the seabed; acknowledges that Scotland’s marine areas also sequester CO2 absorbed by terrestrial plants after they wash into coastal waters and fall to the seabed, with the rate at which these important processes occur being affected by the nature of any marine management measures adopted, and believes that the threats to Scotland’s blue carbon hotspots and habitats must be managed to maximise the amount of blue carbon sequestered by and stored in Scotland’s seas.
