The motion

That the Parliament recognises 31 August 2023 as International Overdose Awareness Day, which is the world’s largest campaign to end drug overdose by raising awareness; understands that this day is dedicated to remembering, without stigma, those who have died from overdose and to acknowledge the grief and pain of family and friends who are left behind; notes that the theme for the 2023 campaign is "recognising those people who go unseen", which, it understands, aims to honour those whose lives have been forever altered by overdose, including grieving family and friends, workers in healthcare and support services who work with strength and compassion to support those with addiction, and the first responders who, it believes, selflessly assume the role of lifesavers in communities; understands that International Overdose Awareness Day was initiated in 2001 by Sally J Finn at the Salvation Army in St Kilda, Melbourne, and that, since then, organisations across the globe have held events to spread the message about the tragedy of overdose and to commemorate those whose lives have been lost; acknowledges that the North Lanarkshire Recovery Network has organised an Overdose Awareness Memorial, which will take place in Coatbridge, and thanks all organisations and groups across the world that work tirelessly to raise awareness and to ensure that those whose lives have been lost or altered due to overdose are not forgotten.
