Calling for the Reinstatement of the Energy Bill Support Scheme

The motion

That the Parliament notes with alarm reports that energy bills remain almost double what they were in 2021; understands that figures released by Cornwall Insights predict that the Ofgem price cap could rise to £2,032.66 in January 2024; believes that this would further exacerbate the effects of the current cost of living crisis and plunge more families into fuel poverty; considers that households are still struggling due to rent and mortgage increases caused by the UK Government's disastrous mini-budget in 2022; calls on the UK Government to bring back the £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme, which it ended in March 2023, to help ease the burden of higher energy bills this winter; believes that households in what it sees as an energy-rich country like Scotland should not be paying some of the highest energy prices in Europe, and considers that this situation can only be addressed by Scotland becoming an independent country with full control over its abundant energy resources.
