International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that the UN General Assembly has declared 26 September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, a day that has been observed annually since 2014, and understands that achieving global nuclear disarmament is one of the oldest goals of the United Nations; believes that, today, approximately 12,705 nuclear weapons remain, and considers that nation-states possessing such weapons have well-funded, long-term plans to modernise their nuclear arsenals; further believes that the persistent doctrine of nuclear deterrence as an element in the security policies of all nuclear possessor states, and many of their allies, increases the likelihood of nuclear proliferation and the risk that such weapons may be used in future conflicts; recognises what it sees as the frustration growing amongst UN member states that do not possess nuclear weapons, in groups such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and its branches across Scotland, and amongst members of the public, regarding what it considers to be the slow pace of nuclear disarmament, and urges the UK Government to lead the world in nuclear disarmament by committing to decommission its own nuclear arsenal.
