Success of the 2023 Stranraer Oyster Festival

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Stranraer Oyster Festival on the success of its 2023 festival, which took place from 15 to 17 September; understands that the event saw 20,000 people attend Stranraer, making it a record turnout, to celebrate Scotland’s only wild, native oysters from the shores of Loch Ryan; further understands that native oysters are ecosystem engineers, which help to maintain marine ecosystems by filtering water, and that they have been sustainably managed over the years to create a habitat for other marine life to thrive and boost biodiversity; notes that the Oyster Festival was attended by celebrity chefs, including Tony Singh and Julie Lin, who held sold-out demonstrations, and that the event had live music, aerobatic displays and trader stands, including local distillers, such as Moffat Distillery, which created a specific bottle design to celebrate the festival, chocolatiers like Stacy Hannah Chocolates and brewers, including Sulwath; understands that the traders sold out their stock, and further understands that the festival first started in 2017 and has become a major event for the region, sharing over a tonne of world-class seafood to visitors over the three days, supporting jobs and businesses, as well as boosting the development of tourism across Dumfries and Galloway.
