Celebrating Scottish and European Folk Day 2023

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the first occurrence of Scottish Folk Day, which tookplace alongside European Folk Day on 23 September 2023; recognises thatScottish Folk Day 2023 was coordinated by Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland(TRACS), an organisation with an ethos centred upon empowering communitiesacross Scotland to discover, develop and practise the traditional arts andheritage that shape and inform the context of their daily lives; notes that theCross Party Group for Music welcomes this celebration of traditional Scottishfolk music and hopes to see this celebration become an annual event; recognisesthat Scottish Folk Day took place alongside European Folk Day 2023, which wasorganised by members of the European Folk Network (EFN); understands that folkmusic, as well as other traditional methods such as dance and storytelling,conveys the voices and stories of people, nations and communities, preservingthe cultures of the past while evolving with each new generation; congratulatesTRACS and the EFN on organising their respective Scottish and European Folk Daycelebrations, and wishes both organisations the best of luck in the future.
