Inverclyde Council Recognised at COSLA Excellence Awards for Slavery Project

The motion

That the Parliament commends Inverclyde Council on winning the Strengthening Communities and Local Democracy award at the 2023 COSLA Excellence Awards for its work in examining the area’s historic links to slavery; understands that, since 2020, Inverclyde Council has been working with a range of partner organisations, community groups and individuals to examine Inverclyde’s historic links to the transatlantic slave trade and how they should be remembered; recognises that a dedicated group was established to take forward the project, examine key themes in closer detail, and investigate appropriate reparations; appreciates that the response from the community has been in favour of focusing on education and ensuring that local people are fully informed about the issues that have influenced Inverclyde in the past and in the present; believes that the Watt Institution in Greenock has played a key role in the project, securing a £230,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support the decolonisation of the museum collection, and wishes Inverclyde Council all the best as it continues this important work.
