Shapinsay Nominated for Prestigious Regeneration Awards

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Shapinsay Development Trust on being shortlisted for the 2023 SURF Awards in the Improving Scotland’s Places category; considers that this nomination reflects the breadth and success of the work that has been done by the community in Shapinsay; understands that the Development Trust opened a new community café, the Smithy, in June 2023, having considered the value that spaces like cafés and pubs add to community life and cohesion; praises the work done to provide new community housing in Shapinsay, especially offering new houses to families moving to the island, and commends the progress made by the Development Trust in bringing previously-vacant properties back into productive use; understands that the Shapinsay Development Trust runs the island’s out-of-hours ferry service linking Shapinsay with Kirkwall, which provides a crucial connection to the cultural and economic life on Mainland; considers that Shapinsay’s nomination to the SURF Awards, which recognise excellence in improving Scottish communities, is well deserved; pays tribute to everyone involved in the Development Trust’s contributions, and wishes all those nominated for awards the very best at the event on 7 December 2023 in Glasgow.
