International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

That the Parliament marks the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, to be observed on 17 October 2023, which is an annual observance that aims to promote understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and wider society; recognises what it sees as the importance of universal access to fair work and social protection as a means to uphold human dignity for all people, and considers that such work must empower people, provide fair wages and safe working conditions, and fundamentally recognise the inherent value and humanity of all workers; believes that well-funded social security programmes, such as the trailblazing Scottish Child Payment, are urgently needed across the UK to assist in providing income security for society's most vulnerable members, and further believes that strong global partnerships between governments, businesses, and civil society organisations, as seen through such actions as the Montrose Community Trust’s Free Kicks initiative, which aims to address food insecurity in deprived areas of Montrose, as well as focussing on the overall health and wellbeing of those taking part, are vital to achieving equitable development and ensuring that no one is excluded or left behind.
