Industrial Action at National World
The motion
That the Parliament stands in solidarity with members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in taking industrial action against their employer, National World, which it understands has imposed a below-inflation 4.5% pay rise on its workers; notes with concern reports of financial hardship being felt by some journalists whose wages have not increased in real terms in several decades, despite, it understands, £1.4 million in profits recently being used by senior management to boost shareholder pay outs; believes that local journalism holds an invaluable place in democracy, ensuring that communities are well-informed, connected, and provided with trustworthy news coverage, and condemns National World management for what it sees as refusing to engage with Acas and the NUJ to negotiate an improved pay package in order to show that the organisation values its journalists and their work.
