The motion

That the Parliament remembers those who lost their lives in the 1877 Blantyre mining disaster; solemnly notes the 146th anniversary of the tragedy, which took place on 22 October 1877; understands that 215 men and boys sadly lost their lives and that it remains Scotland’s worst mining disaster; highlights that an estimated 6% of the whole population of Blantyre died in the tragedy; pays tribute to the many local residents and organisations that have worked relentlessly over the years to ensure that the pit disaster is never forgotten, including the Blantyre Project, which has been publishing in-depth articles and stories throughout the month of October 2023, and stands with the Blantyre community and those who will be remembering the miners who never returned home from work that fateful day, 146 years ago.
