White Poppies

That the Parliament considers that, as Remembrance Day approaches, the sight of red poppies serves as a powerful reminder of wartime sacrifices; believes, however, that there exists an alternative perspective symbolised by the white poppy, created 90 years ago, focusing on peace, inclusivity and challenging militarism; acknowledges that, in 1933, the Co-operative Women's Guild created the first white poppies, now distributed by the Peace Pledge Union, born from the experiences of those who had lost loved ones during the First World War; considers that concerns about Remembrance Day's shift towards militarism prompted this alternative symbol; believes that the white poppy embodies the three fundamental principles of inclusive remembrance, a challenge to militarism and an active pursuit of peace; understands that, during both World Wars, James Maxton played a pivotal role in advocating for conscientious objectors in Glasgow, and later went on to become the Member of Parliament for Bridgeton, now within the Glasgow Shettleston constituency; further understands that Maxton, a socialist and conscientious objector himself, fought for the rights of those opposing the war, advocating for alternative service, and that his efforts led to greater recognition of conscientious objectors' rights and left a lasting legacy, ensuring that conscientious objectors had alternatives to military service, and considers that the white poppy and James Maxton's legacy offer alternative perspectives on war and remembrance, emphasising inclusivity and peace, and challenging militarism, while reminding people of the enduring pursuit of a more peaceful and just world.
