Gambling Harm

The motion

That the Parliament notes that a study by GambleAware has recorded that only 17% of people in Scotland who experience any level of gambling harm are accessing support services; recognises that GambleAware is concerned about the low number of people seeking help and has published maps and data to address treatment and support needs; understands that the five local authority areas in Scotland with the highest estimated rates of gambling problems are Glasgow City, Dundee City, North Lanarkshire, Aberdeen City, and the City of Edinburgh; accepts that problem gambling can cause financial distress, homelessness, relationship breakdown and mental health problems; asks the Scottish Government to take cognisance of the report and to take action to improve data collection and support services; calls on the UK Government to introduce the gambling levy as soon as possible and to set the levy at much more than the proposed 1% fee on gross gambling yield for online gambling operators and 0.4% for betting shops and casinos, and believes that every penny raised from the levy should be used to resource tackling gambling addiction and funding treatment.
