Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum's "Cape Must Pay" Campaign

Lodged by Marie McNair (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 13 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament supports the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum's national campaign, "Cape Must Pay"; acknowledges that the campaign demands that Cape Intermediate Holdings pays £10 million to fund medical research to find a cure for mesothelioma; notes that, according to the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum, Cape Intermediate Holdings was one of the largest asbestos companies in the world, with products used widely across the country, mainly in construction, and is reported to have played a large part in increased asbestos diseases and mortality, including mesothelioma, across the UK; understands that the Supreme Court granted the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum access to documents from Cape, which reportedly found that Cape had downplayed the fatal risks of working with its products and encouraged others to suppress this information; further understands that, despite recent discussions with representatives of the campaign, Cape has refused to meet the demands; notes with great sadness that Clydebank was once considered the asbestos capital of Europe due to the area’s prolific shipbuilding industry and heavy industrial past, which is believed to have resulted in hundreds of asbestos-related deaths, and commends the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum’s hard work to achieve justice for victims, and the work of local groups such as Clydebank Asbestos Group for their continued campaigning on this issue.
