New Galloway Town Hall Reopens Following £450,000 Renovation

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the reopening of New Galloway Town Hall following a £450,000 renovation; understands that the opening was marked with a Grand Opening Concert, entitled A Time and a Place, featuring local performers, and that a time capsule will be sealed behind a false wall in the building with the aim of creating a picture of life today in Scotland’s smallest Royal Burgh; welcomes the work to safeguard the future of the B-listed building, which dates from 1875 and was co-ordinated by Local Initiatives in New Galloway (LING), a charitable organisation, which took over ownership of the building from the local authority in 2022; understands that the works involved renovating the Victorian Moral Maxims on the Upper Hall walls, restoring the external rendering and paintwork, giving the building’s distinctive 150-year-old clock an MOT, making the building more accessible through adding a lift and disabled toilets, and adding in measures to make the building more efficient and environmentally friendly to run, and congratulates all at LING and those who supported the renovation for their work in restoring what it sees as a vital part of New Galloway’s built heritage, which, it believes, can now play a full part in the modern life of the town once again.
